What is Turtle Friendly-Lighting?

Upon hatching, baby sea turtles instinctively migrate toward moonlight reflected off the ocean surface to find their way to the sea. Artificial light from coastal developments disorients the turtles, causing them to migrate in the wrong direction.

Turtle-friendly lighting reduces the ecological impact of artificial light in coastal areas home to sea turtle nesting sites.

How Does it Work?

Short wavelength lighting closely resembles reflected moonlight baby sea turtles use to orient themselves after hatching. Utilizing shielding tech-niques, longer wavelength lighting, and minimizing brightness make the lighting less perceptible to baby sea turtles, reducing interference.

Follow the three golden rules below to make your turtle-friendly lighting project a success.

Golden Rules of Beachfront Lighting

1. Keep it Low
Mount fixtures as low to the ground as possible. The lighting must be the lowest possible wattage & lumens necessary for the project.

2. Keep it Long
The lamp must produce only long wavelength light — 560nm or greater, such as amber, orange, or red.

3. Keep it Shielded
The lighting must be directed downward. The fixture or installation area must shield the light from the beach.
